Historischer Hintergrund: Einige Sorben hatten sich vor der 1848-Revolution aktiv in der sorbischen nationalen und demokratischen Bewegung engagiert, zogen sich jedoch in den Jahren danach zurück und resignierten.
In seiner Bildergeschichte kritisiert Wjelan diese Haltung. Herrn Wjesela stellt er als lächerlichen Versager bloß, dem nicht einmal die Stadtflucht gelingt.

Satirical depiction of a failed escape from the city to the country in 32 images with text. Published in 1850/51 in "Tydźeńske Nowiny", an Upper Sorbian newspaper published since 1842. This is the graphic artist and author: Julius Eduard Wjelan (officially: Wehlan) (1817-1892), 1850-1892 pastor in the village of Schleife. The hero of the story: knjez Wjesela - Mr. Wjesela [Cheerful], Sorb, high official, townsman with a manor house in the country, action period: 1850-1851. Historical background: Some Sorbs had been actively involved in the Sorbian national and democratic movement before the 1848 revolution, but withdrew and resigned in the years thereafter. In his picture story, Wjelan criticizes this attitude. He exposes Mr. Wjesela as a ridiculous loser who doesn't even succeed in fleeing the city.
