Średniowieczna astronomia / Medieval Astronomy
-- English version below --
This dataset is related to a great contributor to the world culture, science and heritage: Nicolaus Copernicus.
The data concern medieval astronomy, more specifically the breakthrough brought about by pronouncing the heliocentric theory. The most important item here is the manuscript of Copernicus' seminal work “De Revolutionibus”, including the very first diagram of the heliocentric system, and its first published edition with handwritten notes provided by Jan Brożek, an eminent scholar from the Krakow Academy, who became an ardent follower of the heliocentric theory. Moreover, we have also included several objects exemplifying the state of astronomical knowledge still based on the geocentric theory at the onset the Copernican revolution, which were used as educational aids in teaching astronomy at universities.
